Spring Lawn Care: Tips to Have Your Yard Looking Its Best

Have you neglected your yard and garden?  Spring is the best time of the year to schedule yard clean-up services.

You’re likely to experience a wet, soggy spring that often turns into a dry, warmer weather, hot summer. It can be difficult to find the perfect balance for your lawn. Fortunately, there are plenty of tips and tricks for keeping your lawn looking its best all year round, even in spring.

Lawns require a lot of work in order to maintain their beauty, but it’s worth every bit of time and money spent on them. A lush, green lawn is personally satisfying and adds curb appeal to any home while also increasing its value. Here are some tips on how you can have an amazing spring lawn this year!

Spring Lawn Care Tips

Assess the soil.

The first step to having a healthy lawn is to have healthy soil. Test your soil pH level and nutrient content so you can add any amendments it might need. When the soil temperatures rise, it’s time to start working the soil. Your soil loves a boost of nutrients, so applying soil conditioner or compost in the early spring will give it the nourishment it needs.

Dethatch or scarify your lawn.

Thatch is a layer of dead grass, roots, and other organic matter that shows up between the soil and the grass blades and builds up on your lawn over time. A thick thatch layer can prevent water and nutrients from getting to the roots of your grass, which can lead to yellow, patchy grass.

If you have a thatch problem, you’ll need to dethatch or scarify your lawn in order to solve it. Both processes remove the thatch layer (lawn clippings) so your lawn can get the resources it needs to be healthy.

Mowing is the key.

Mowing your lawn is the most important thing you can do to keep it looking its best. Mowing helps to remove dead and dying grass, which allows new growth to come in. It also helps to control weeds.

The best time to mow your lawn is in the early morning, before the heat of the day sets in. The cooler temperatures will help your grass recover from being cut. You should also make sure that you mow often enough so that you’re not removing more than one-third of the grass blade with each mowing.

Fertiliser is still important.

Even though your lawn is growing slowly in the spring, it’s still important to fertilise. Quality lawn fertiliser provides the nutrients that your grass needs to grow and thrive.

You should also make sure that you use a fertiliser that’s designed for use in the spring. Look for a fertiliser with a high nitrogen content, which will help your grass to green up quickly. You should also avoid using too much fertiliser, as this can cause burn spots on your lawn.

Watering should be continual.

Watering your lawn is important in the spring, but you should be careful not to overwater. Too much water can lead to disease and fungal problems.

The best way to water your lawn is with a sprinkler system that has a timer. This will help you to ensure that your grass is getting the right amount of water. You should also avoid watering in the middle of the day, as this can cause evaporation and waste water.

Aerating can help.

Aerating your lawn can also be helpful in the spring. This process involves poking holes in the soil by using a garden fork to allow air and water to reach the grassroots.

Aeration is especially important if you live in an area with compacted soils. It can also help to improve drainage and reduce thatch buildup. You should aerate your lawn once a year, in the spring or fall.

Repair bald spots with grass seed.

If you have any bald spots on your lawn, now is the time to repair them. You can do this by raking out the dead grass and applying new seeds.

Be sure to use a grass seed that’s designed for your area. You should also apply a thin layer of mulch to help keep the seeds moist. Keep the seeded area watered until the new grass has had a chance for lawn growth.
