How to Clean Floor Tile Grout: A Quick Guide to Keep Your Home Sparkling

Keeping your home tidy and clean is a constant challenge, especially in modern homes with smaller spaces. From upholstery to flooring, every corner of the house needs constant attention. While carpets and upholstery are fairly easy to maintain and keep clean, tile flooring poses its own set of challenges. It’s not just grime that gets on tiles—substances like soap scum, essential oils from plants, mould, and mildew can all accumulate on them. Grout is one of the most difficult areas to get clean because it’s a porous surface that can be colonised by bacteria and dirt.

To keep your home cleaner for longer, follow our tips on how to clean your floor's dirty grout easily and efficiently. These simple tricks will help you achieve a sparkling result without too much effort!

What You'll Need

There are a few different ways to clean grout off your floor, but we recommend using natural solutions whenever possible. Not only are they better for the environment, but they’re also gentle on sensitive surfaces like grout. For this method, you’ll need:

  • Sponge
  • Bucket
  • Warm water
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Clean cloth or sponge
  • Spray bottle
  • Scrubbing brush or toothbrush
  • Rubber gloves
  • Mop

Cleaning Floor Tile Grout with Baking Soda (bicarbonate of soda)

Did you know that you can clean grout with baking soda? It’s a versatile cleaner and stain remover that can be used to tidy up a wide range of surfaces and appliances. Bicarbonate of soda is a natural alkaline cleaner that can combat unwanted odours and stains on grout. But you have to be careful as too much bicarbonate of soda can actually cause your tiles to become more alkaline, resulting in the tiles having a dull finish.

Cleaning grout with bicarbonate of soda:

  1. Add ½ cup of baking soda to a bucket of warm water and mix until it has dissolved.
  2. Dip a sponge in the solution and start scrubbing the grout lines.
  3. Pay extra attention to areas that seem dirtier or have more build-up.
  4. Rinse the area with clean water and dry with a clean cloth or sponge.

Cleaning Floor Tile Grout with Vinegar Solution

Vinegar is another natural cleaning product that can be used in cleaning grout. Vinegar is acidic, so it’s effective at breaking down grime, mould, and mildew. It’s also great for removing soap scum. However, you need to be careful when using vinegar to clean grout because it can also damage the surface. If you’re going to use vinegar, make sure to dilute it with water.

To clean your floor grout lines with vinegar:

  1. Mix ¼ cup of vinegar with ¼ cup of warm water in a bowl or bucket.
  2. Dip a sponge or cloth in the solution and start scrubbing the grout lines.
  3. Focus on areas that seem dirtier or have more build-up.
  4. Rinse the area with clean water and dry with a clean cloth or sponge.
  5. Use a toothbrush to scrub hard-to-reach areas and corners.
  6. Repeat this process every week or two to keep your grout clean!

Mixing Baking Soda and Vinegar

For a more powerful cleaning solution, you can mix baking soda and vinegar together to clean grout. This combination creates a chemical reaction that’s effective at breaking down dirt, grime, and mould. Here's how:

  1. Make a paste of bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Mix ¼ cup of bicarbonate of soda with ¼ cup of vinegar in a bowl or bucket. Add ½ cup of warm water and mix until the ingredients are fully dissolved.
  2. Apply the grout cleaning solution to the grout lines and let it sit for 15 minutes.
  3. Use a toothbrush or other stiff brush to scrub the grout lines.
  4. Rinse the area with water.

Cleaning Floor Tile Grout with Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is another cleaning product that can be used to clean grout. It is a powerful oxidising agent that’s effective at breaking down dirt, grime, and mould. It’s also great for removing soap scum. However, you need to be careful when using hydrogen peroxide on grout because it can also damage the surface. If you’re going to use it, make sure to dilute it with water.

How to clean grout with hydrogen peroxide:

  1. Fill a bucket with equal parts water and hydrogen peroxide.
  2. Dip a sponge or brush into the mixture and scrub the grout.
  3. Rinse the area with clean water.
  4. Repeat as necessary.

Cleaning Floor Tile Grout with Bleach

Bleach is a very potent cleaning agent that has been used for centuries to clean various surfaces, including tiles and grout. Although it's an effective agent to clean grout, you may want to avoid using bleach if your grout has a lot of colour in it as it may cause fading.

To clean your grout with bleach:

Mix one part bleach and nine parts water. This is the proper ratio of bleach to the water.

  1. Pour the solution over the grout.
  2. Make sure the grout is well covered and leave the solution to sit on the grout for 10 to 15 minutes. This will break down and dissolve dirt and impurities.
  3. Scrub the grout with a scrubbing brush
  4. Use water and a small amount of bleach to scrub the grout and tiles.

How to Seal Floor Tile Grout

tile sealing

Now that we're done sharing with you the different ways on how to clean grout, it's time to teach you how to seal it. Sealing your grout is an important part of keeping your floor tile looking new. Sealing helps to protect the grout from dirt, spills, and stains. It is best to seal your grout after it has been installed and allowed to cure for 24 hours.

To seal your tile floor grout, you will need:

  • A grout sealer
  • A clean cloth or brush
  • Paper towels

Begin by vacuuming or sweeping the floor to remove any dirt or debris. Next, apply the grout sealer to a clean cloth or brush. Apply the sealer to the grout lines, being sure to get into all of the crevices. Once the grout is completely covered, wipe away any excess with a paper towel. Allow the sealer to dry for at least two hours before walking on the floor or replacing furniture. Sealing your tile floors should be done every six months to ensure that your floors look their best.

Additional Tips and Advice

Here are a few additional tips to keep in mind:

  • Be sure to read the labels on all cleaners and chemical products before using them. Some cleaners may damage the finish on your floor tiles.
  • Test any cleaner in an inconspicuous area before using it on the entire floor. This will help you avoid damaging your floors.
  • Cleaning floors can be a time-consuming task. For an easier way to clean your floors, consider hiring professional cleaners.
  • When mopping your floor, be sure to use clean water. Dirty water will only spread dirt and grime around on your floor.
  • Be sure to dry the floor after cleaning it. This will help prevent streaks and stains.
  • If you have any stubborn stains that you can’t remove, you may need to call a professional cleaning company. They will have the right tools and products to get the job done right.

Now that you know how to clean grout and floor tiles, there is no excuse for not keeping your floors looking their best! A little bit of elbow grease and the right cleaners will have your floors sparkling in no time.
