How to Clean Curtains Like A Pro

We already taught you how to clean Roman blinds and how to clean windows you can't reach. This time, we're going to teach you how to clean curtains like a pro. Whether you have synthetic drapes or delicate sheer fabrics, our comprehensive guide will provide you with essential cleaning techniques that are suitable for every curtain type. So if you want to keep your curtains fresh and clean, read this blog to learn everything from stain removal to preserving fabric integrity.

How often should you clean curtains?

Depending on various factors such as the environment, usage, and your personal preference, it is generally recommended to clean curtains every 3 to 6 months. However, if your space is prone to dust and allergens or if your curtains are placed in high-traffic areas, curtain cleaning may need to be done more frequently, perhaps every 2 to 3 months.

What is the best way to clean curtains without washing?

Depending on how dirty your curtains are, here's a general guide on how to clean curtains using different cleaning methods.

Vacuuming

For weekly cleaning, you can use a vacuum cleaner with soft brush attachment or upholstery attachment to effectively remove dust, loose dirt, and allergens from the curtains. Regular vacuuming not only minimises allergic reactions but it also preserves the overall freshness and appearance of your drapes.

Start from the top and work your way down, making sure that you cover every inch of the curtain surface. This not only makes your curtains cleaner but it also helps them last longer by preventing the gradual build-up of particles that can damage the fabric over time.

Lint Roller Cleaning

In households with pets, it is common for pet hair to cling around various surfaces of your home, including curtains. While you can wash curtains to remove stubborn pet hair, using a lint roller provides a quick practical solution to tackle this issue without even taking down your drapes.

Curtain cleaning using lint brush is not only convenient but it is also effective in preserving the aesthetic appeal of your curtains. Since you won't need to use water or detergents, there's no risk of potential damage to the fabric or colors. Additionally, opting to use a lint roller is an eco-friendly alternative, as it reduces the need for frequent machine washings, allowing you to save water and energy.

Spot Cleaning

Spot cleaning is a targeted cleaning method used to address specific stains or localised dirt on curtains without subjecting the entire fabric to a full cleaning process. To spot clean, identify the stain and test a cleaning solution in a hidden corner to avoid damage.

Prepare a solution appropriate for the stain by mixing mild detergent and water. Dampen a clean cloth with the solution and gently blot the stained area from the outer edges toward the center. Avoiding rubbing to prevent damage and allow the spot-cleaned area to air dry completely. Repeat the process if needed. Spot cleaning is ideal for small stains, offering a focused approach without subjecting the entire curtain to a full cleaning routine.

Steam Cleaning

Steam cleaning your curtains is another effective method that does not require washing. To steam clean curtains, all you need is to hang your curtains in place and pay extra attention to the folds and pleats where dust tends to accumulate. Move the steamer in a consistent and smooth motion to cover the entire surface. Once steamed, leave the curtains to air dry.

This method is suitable for a variety of curtains, including delicate fabrics that may be prone to damage during traditional washing. Not only is it effective for freshening up curtains but it is also perfect in removing odors and addressing light stains without the need for washing.

What should you do before you wash your curtains?

Before cleaning your curtains, it's crucial to conduct a colorfastness test. Since some fabrics are more delicate than they appear, a colorfastness test is essential to avoid potential damage. By conducting this simple precautionary step, you can protect your curtains from color bleeding, fading, or other adverse reactions that might compromise their visual appeal.

To perform colorfastness, simply take a small, inconspicuous section of the curtain and immerse it in a bowl of warm water mixed with a mild detergent. Keep an eye out for any changes in color or signs of bleeding. If the color stays the same, you're good to go with your chosen cleaning method. But if you notice any color changes, it's better to seek help from professional cleaning experts.

How do you wash different types of curtains?

Cleaning different types of curtains requires specific approaches based on the fabric and construction. Here's a general guide for washing various curtain types:

Cotton Drapes or Curtains

Cotton drapes can usually be hand-washed or machine-washed, provided they are unlined.

1. Remove stains

Cotton drapes can show stains more than other fabrics due to their absorbent nature. So before washing, it is recommended to carefully examine the window treatments first so you can pre-treat and spot clean the affected areas. This step is essential in making sure that the fabric retains its original color and quality.

2. Wash on delicate cycle

After treating the stains, set your washing machine in delicate cycle and wash curtains using mild laundry detergent and cold water. Make sure to give your drapes ample space in the washing machine to avoid crushing. Afterwards, iron the curtains while they are still slightly damp to prevent wrinkles from setting in these natural fabrics.

3. Dry on low heat setting and iron

Put the curtains in the dryer and choose the low-heat setting. Once the curtains are almost dry, take them out immediately to prevent wrinkles from setting in. Gently iron the slightly damp cotton window treatments on the reverse side of the fabric, using a pressing cloth to prevent scorching. Rehang the curtains so they can dry completely and also to remove any remaining wrinkles.

Synthetic Drapes of Curtains

Dry cleaning is not recommended for synthetic fabrics like nylon and polyester as it may cause damage. It's better to opt for hand- or machine-washing these fabrics or consider hiring the best cleaners for the job to guarantee safe and professional cleaning. For blockout curtains made from synthetic materials, check the label for machine-washing instructions as they are often designed for easy care.

1. Separate colors

Sort curtains by color, washing light and dark ones separately.

2. Wash in cold water

Set your washing machine in a delicate cycle and wash your curtains using mild laundry detergent and cold water. Do not use chlorine bleach on synthetic drapes and curtains as these may cause damage to the fabric.

3. Dry in low heat setting

Dry your drapes and curtains in the dryer under low to medium heat setting. Hang them promptly once they are dry to avoid wrinkles.

Silk Curtains

Washing silk curtains requires careful attention to maintain their delicate nature. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to clean silk drapes:

1. Hand washing

Fill a basin or sink with cold water and add the mild detergent. Gently squeeze suds through the silk curtains without rubbing them. Let the curtains soak for a short period until the detergent covers the entire fabric.

2. Remove excess water

After washing, rinse silk in warm water, swishing the fabric around to remove soap. Repeat the rinsing process until the water is no longer sudsy. Lay the fabric as flat as possible on a thick bath towel, then gently roll the towel to squeeze out excess water.

3. Air dry cleaning and iron

After washing, air dry silk indoors and keep it away from any heat sources. If possible, it's better to iron your silk draperies or curtains to prevent water stains. Set the iron to a low or silk setting and iron it on the reverse side using a pressing cloth to shield the fabric from scorching.

Sheer Curtains

Sheer fabric, including certain lace varieties, require more frequent cleaning compared to other fabrics. This is because waiting too long between cleanings can lead to discoloration and a dingy appearance.

1. Soak in cold water

Soak these delicate fabrics in fresh, cold water and mild laundry detergent, for approximately five minutes. Drain the water and carefully proceed with the washing process.

2. Wash in delicate cycle

Make sure that you set your washing machine on the lowest setting possible to prevent any unnecessary stress on the material.

3. Dry and reshape

Put your sheer curtains in a dryer on a no-heat, air-only setting, and include one or two soft, dry terry cloth towels. These towels will delicately prevent the sheer fabric from bunching up during tumbling. Afterwards, remove the curtains while slightly damp to prevent wrinkles.

Is it better to wash or dry-clean curtains?

Depending on the care instructions and your curtain's fabric type, washing may be a convenient and cost-effective option for curtains that can withstand machine washing. For delicate fabrics such as silk or wool, dry-cleaning is more recommended to ensure a safer cleaning process. In other cases, a combination approach may be suitable for curtains with mixed fabrics.

Takeaway

Cleaning drapes is an essential household chore that is often overlooked. Beyond enhancing the visual appeal of your living spaces, it plays a critical role in maintaining a healthy indoor environment. Whatever type of fabric your curtain has, always check care labels, perform spot tests, and consider the specific needs of your curtains for optimal results.
