Autumn Lawn Care Tips to Keep Your Yard Looking Great!

Don't have the time to take care of your yard? Looking for a Wollongong lawn mowing service?  Or perhaps a Newcastle lawn mowing service?  Let Elleishas Property Services take care of your lawn mowing and garden maintenance needs.

Keeping your lawn green and lush can be a struggle in the fall. With the ground cooling, your grass doesn’t have as much moisture to keep it growing. This is especially true for Bermuda and other warm-weather grasses that thrive in hotter temperatures.

If you live in an area with mild winters, you might struggle to keep your lawn thriving from March to May. But with some careful planning and autumn lawn care techniques, you can extend your green season by another few weeks! Follow these autumn lawn care tips to keep your yard looking great this fall.

Autumn Lawn Care Tips

Below are the tips you need to follow for a healthy and green lawn this autumn:

Mow your lawn before it goes dormant.

Mowing your lawn before it goes dormant will encourage growth and help your lawn look its best for as long as possible. In addition to promoting growth, mowing your lawn in the fall will help you get a head start on spring lawn care. It will give you a great idea of how your lawn grows in different areas, so you can make adjustments for next year.

Finally, mowing your lawn will help you prevent it from going dormant. While mowing your lawn won’t keep it lush year-round, it will allow you to keep your warm-season grasses alive a little longer in the fall. If you wait too long to mow, your lawn may go dormant. This means that the roots stop growing, the blades stop growing, and the growth above the ground begins to die.

If your lawn goes dormant, you may need to start over next spring so that the roots can regrow. Mowing your lawn before it goes dormant will allow you to get the most out of your lawn while you still can.

Fertilise to promote root growth.

Fertilising your lawn promotes root growth, which is great for helping it survive the fall. You can use a liquid fertiliser for lawns, but you can also use a bagged organic fertiliser or a slow-release fertiliser. When fertilising your lawn, use about half the recommended amount of fertiliser. This will give your lawn a healthy boost without causing it to become overgrown.

If you fertilise your lawn, be careful not to overdo it. Fertilising your lawn too much can cause your lawn to grow too quickly and become thick and dense. This can also cause your lawn to be more prone to weeds and other lawn diseases. It’s best to fertilise your lawn once every two weeks or once a month. Follow the instructions on the fertiliser bag to find out how much fertiliser you should use per lawn.

Overseed your lawn in the fall.

If you have bare spots on your lawn, over-seeding is a great way to fill them in. Overseeding is a good idea if you have an area of your lawn that’s not getting enough sunlight. This can include shady spots around your yard, on the north side of your house, and in shady spots under trees. To successfully overseed your lawn, you’ll need to choose the right seeds.

Overseeding your lawn in the fall could help your lawn survive cooler temperatures and heavier rains. But before you seed, make sure to rake up any leaves that have fallen on your lawn so that they don’t end up in your seedlings. After seeding, water your lawn regularly to make sure the seeds take root.

Water your lawn regularly.

If your lawn doesn’t receive enough water, it could start to go dormant. When it’s late autumn, it's cooler outside, the soil will retain less moisture, which will make it harder for your lawn to get the water it needs. To make sure your lawn has enough water, water it two to three times a week for about 15 minutes per session during cooler months.

If you’re using a sprinkler, make sure to water both the top and the bottom of the lawn to prevent it from going dormant. If your lawn is going dormant, you can also use a hose to water the soil directly. This will help your lawn get the water it needs without growing too much. If you use a sprinkler or a hose to water your lawn, don’t water it too much.

You don’t want to water your lawn so much that it floods or drowns the roots. Instead, water it enough that the top of the soil is moist but not saturated.

Rake and remove leaves.

Raking your leaves is the easiest way to ensure that they don’t end up on your lawn. If you have a large yard with a lot of trees, you may have a lot of leaves to rake. You can choose to bag them or compost them, but raking them is the easiest way to get them off of your lawn.

When raking your leaves, try to rake them up in one fell swoop. Pulling the leaves towards you puts more stress on your back and arms than raking them towards the ground. When you rake your leaves, be sure to remove them from your lawn as well.

Piling the leaves in one area can prevent them from decomposing and can smother your grass. Instead, rake the leaves into a pile, and then remove them from your lawn. You can choose to put the leaves in a compost pile, bag them for the trash, or haul them away with a leaf blower.

Aerate your lawn.

Aerating your lawn will help promote root growth, which will make your lawn more resilient. You can aerate your lawn with a handheld aerator or a lawn aerator. A handheld aerator or a garden fork can be used on small lawns, while a lawn aerator can be used on larger lawns. When aerating your lawn, make sure to remove any plugs that come up. These plugs are great fertilisers for your lawn, but they won’t decompose if they’re left on the ground. Aerating your lawn is a great way to promote root growth. But aerating your lawn won’t help your lawn grow more quickly in the fall. Instead, it should be done in the spring to promote root growth and help your lawn survive the summer.

Remove weeds on your lawn.

Weeds are one of the most common problems when lawns go dormant. If you leave weeds on your lawn, they could overtake it. Pull up any weeds you see on your lawn before they get a chance to grow. If you miss a few weeds, you can also use a herbicide to kill them.

While you don’t want to spray your lawn too often, it’s better to use a herbicide than to let weeds overrun your lawn. Even if you keep weeds out of your lawn, it could still go dormant. If it does, there’s not much you can do except hope that it recovers next spring or fall. The best thing you can do to help your lawn survive the fall is to make sure that it has enough water, sunlight, and fertiliser.

Mulch your flower beds.

Mulching your flower beds will help them survive the winter. It will trap moisture, preventing your flower beds from drying out. While it’s best to mulch your flower beds in the spring, you can mulch them in the fall as well. If you have a lot of leaves on your lawn, you can also use them as mulch in your flower beds.

Just make sure to remove them before they decompose and become too moist. Other organic mulches, like straw and wood chips, can also be used in the fall. If you mulch your flower beds in the fall, remove the mulch before spring so that your flowers can get enough sunlight. You can also use a weed barrier, like cardboard, to help keep weeds out of your flower beds while still allowing them to get sunlight.

Look for Pests

If your lawn is starting to go dormant, it may also get pests. You can use a handheld insect killer to spray for pests, but you may want to wait until your lawn is starting to go dormant. Spraying for pests when your lawn is still lush can kill your lawn as well. If you find any pests on your lawn, try to remove them manually before they have a chance to do too much damage. If you have grubs, you may want to treat your lawn with an insecticide.
